I forgot to mention that, indeed, I was mixing down to a Sony DAT recorder. As all the synthesizer stuff was sequenced from the Atari, mixing down to DAT earned the "Direct to Digital" moniker
YES, the DAT!!!! What a difference it made being able to put all the midi stuff direct to the mix via a decent board. I ended up with a Mackie 24/8. All my effects were midi by then as well. I remember having one song long track just for program changes so you could move the timing of it a little forward/back so the change would occur just at the right time. Boy all that midi programming was A LOT of work!!!!!!
I just recently went through all my old DAT tapes and put what I wanted to keep on a hard drive, then sadly threw out the tapes and the machine. I hadn't used it in 30 years and well sometimes you just have to move on. I tried selling it but no one was interested.

Wish I could have done that before my studio burned down in the 2003 Cedar File.
Oh man, so sorry to hear this. I was 1/2 block from an evacuation zone during the Los Angeles fires in January.

Watching the fire's progress on the Watch Duty app, and just watching the orange light from the fire and smoke fill the sky less than a mile away was extremely stressful. I was sure I wouldn't see my studio and gear much longer but ultimately didn't have to leave.

I can't imagine if I lost it all.

Well, that surely did not happen to me... family and house came through fine, I was insured, and the studio was eventually rebuilt. But I do regret not having copies of the archives, dating from the years I first started recording during college.

Now we have cloud backups. Well worth the $100 I send to BackBlaze every year for unlimited storage for my studio computer and all attached drives.

DAT was the final piece in the puzzle... an affordable, CD-quality mixdown deck, at last! Got me my first library placements with Network, which was a great company to work with. Thanks Larry Groupe!

I never recorded with DAT, I recorded with tape from 1962 to 1991 or 92, then briefly switched to digidesign Session-8 for 2 or 3 years, then to a DAW. I tried several DAWs through out the 90s and settled on Cakewalk Sonar for several years. Then in 2010 I tried Reaper for sample editing and have been using it ever since, mainly for it's customising ability. Many of the sample developers use Reaper, even if it's only to edit their samples.

Hey there Tod, how is that pedal steel guitar VI coming along? I would love to look at that, if it's available anywhere.

Hi Bill, I've still got work to do on it, I've got 2 sets of Steel Guitar samples that I need to combine into one instrument. I've been sidetracked, but hope to get to it soon.

Thanks for asking Bill and keep posted, I'd like to finish it all up as soon as possible. :)
