How did I not know about this chord progression before?

If you're referring to the Pet Shop Boys song, it's not exactly the Royal Road progression because it doesn't include the V chord. The chorus goes: F - Em - Am But you're right, it's extremely close and imparts a similar feel.

How did I not know about this chord progression before?

I stumbled onto yet another interesting YT video related to songwriting and chord progressions. This time it has a name: The Royal Road progression - or in Japanese: Odo Shinko. Apparently, it's overwhelmingly popular in Japan, not only for pop songs, but also in anime and video game...

    4-chord patterns galore!

I stumbled onto this video the other day, and thought I’d share with the group. The video presents some of the most common 4-chord progressions in every mode. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with modes - you don’t need to know theory to make use of these progressions. I love this kind of...

Sold my Soul to the Devil

I spent half the morning trying to find just one of the posts, but the VI-C search engine is not very effective, and even using Google didn't help. However, I did find a reddit thread about this very topic: Anyone else seeing clients switch to AI music for commercials? Speaking for myself...

Sold my Soul to the Devil

Yes, hopefully you're right 🤞 But in the last 6 months, I've seen several postings on VI-C where a composer lost out on a gig because the client decided to make their own AI music. Most clients are not musicians and don't have a musically discerning ear, so it's very conceivable they'd be...

Sold my Soul to the Devil

I can't even make myself rich! Clearly, making people rich is a job I'm not very good at :ROFLMAO: Agreed. It's similar to folks who construct music with loops. For some it brings tremendous satisfaction, while others find it boring and unsatisfying. It really only becomes problematic when...

Sold my Soul to the Devil

Thanks for the clarification. Immediately after the settlement, the initial buzz was that Warner now owned Suno, but obviously, it's more nuanced than that.

Sold my Soul to the Devil

I'm not a lawyer, but if you're the original writer and AI is just creating an arrangement for you, I would think you would own the rights, and therefore could sell the music. I view it as very similar to writing a song and then using EZdrummer to play the drums, EZkeys for the keyboard part...

Sold my Soul to the Devil

I have a young friend who's a filmmaker (commercials, corporate videos, short form videos). Since I did a lot of video work once upon a time, he and I often discuss film, cinematography, video production, etc. The other day we were talking about lyric videos, and afterwards, he sent me a lyric...

Don't miss out on the fun of arranging

Oh heavens no. There is no "better" - it's all about what works best for each of us. You should definitely adhere to the method that feels comfortable and natural, and helps you achieve the desired results. In my post, I was merely sharing my love and enthusiasm for the arranging process. I...

    Epic Trailer Music Breaks

I've never had a specific length that I always use. It's usually driven by the individual piece and the nature of the stopdown. For example, if at the end of a section, the stopdown includes a prolonged downer, it could last 2-3 measures, or even longer. Whatever it takes to bring the audio...

    Epic Trailer Music Breaks

For the past 4-5 years, I've written trailer music for two libraries - one a standard music licensing library, and another library that specializes in only trailers. The guidance I've always received is to include clear and obvious breaks (referred to as "stopdowns") between sections. In fact...

Don't miss out on the fun of arranging

I wrote this song about 15 years ago, primarily to add to our jam night repertoire with my guitar-playing buddies. It was nothing more than a typical singer-songwriter tune with no particular genre affiliation - just a plain old singing and strumming song. But several years later, when I...

    Songs by Month

I'm cheating a bit with this one - leveraging "May" as a name rather than a month. But I've always loved this song... But if we're being strict about May the month, then the song that instantly comes to mind is "September Song", which has already been referenced in a couple of other threads...
