Hello everyone!

I would like to suggest an addition to the name of the forum "Mixing & Mastering" => "Recording, Mixing & Mastering" instead of "Mixing & Mastering", so recording is an essential part of producing a song, for example, when recording an acoustic guitar (steel strings) and voice, you need to make a selection of microphones, placement in front of the guitar, compression, voice mic, compression, etc.. Then there is mixing and so on.

Good luck for the forum!!

Excellent suggestion. To simplify, it could say, "Engineering, Mixing & Mastering"

Thinking about this a bit more, 'Recording' warrants its own forum section (under Production), as it encompasses a whole spectrum of techniques, from mic placements on drums and guitar amps, to vocal techniques and everything in between.

My initial suggestion was a practical one to include the three stages of production from start to finish in a single category, but considering that this is not VI-Control and this forum deserves its own identity, now that your proposal has arisen, why not have three forums separate and focused on their specific arts (under Production)?
  • Recording
  • Mixing
  • Mastering

Although I'm not completely against separate forums for mixing and mastering, I think discussions about mastering are pretty rare. I visit several music forums, and besides the incidental questions about 'which mastering service to use' and 'what is in your mastering chain' (mostly answered with 'Izotope'), I see almost no discussions on mastering techniques.

But you are right, although discussions about how to use these simple tools could go deep and educational.

It is not about how deep these discussions can go, but rather how many discussions there will be. A separate forum to house these eight (or some such) discussions seems a bit overkill.

However, it will suffice just to see what discussions will entail, and if needed, setup additional forums and move the topics accordingly. If this is done during the first weeks (or such) of the forum getting up to speed, it won't be that much of a hassle.

I think you're right, so I've added "Recording" to the sub-forum title.

I can see doing that later on, but for now, I think the visuals are better with fewer forums, so things appear more active, as opposed to dozens of dead sub-forums.

Plus, we're a long way off from the forum becoming a resource where people would scan sub-forums looking specifically for Mixing tips. For now, I think most of us would rather click one sub-forum and see all the engineering topics in one shot, since speaking for myself at least, I'm interested in all three.

Engineering is a bit of a 'catch all' definition, including mixing and mastering (mixing engineer, mastering engineer, etc.). I think 'Recording, Mixing & Mastering' sums it up nicely.
That's a good point. I tend to think of engineering as everything from studio setup to recording/tracking, but you're right, the term also applies to mixing and mastering.

Since the "recording" part is my favorite part of that process (and the one over which I've obsessed the most), that update pleases me. :) And I'll be happy to share what I've learned through my descend into madness!
