Speaking of Songwriters

Though to combine this with the discussion about lyrics - I have no idea what this song is about. I can understand a few words here and there. And horses. And something about love. But it is nice to hear something that isn't rap or dance music. I've become a boomer. I don't understand the music these kids today are listening to. Give me old fashioned rock music! LOL!

@Reid Rosefelt if you don't like the words, just mumble them?

I have to admit I never really listened to lyrics when I was growing up, but was hyper tuned into the music, especially the melody. Many times I would find I had the words wrong for years! I'm more focused on listening to the lyrics as I'm trying to be a better songwriter.

Regarding 'Horses' there are times when I don't 'hear' the words clearly either. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I found this on the web. I think it's a good example of solid song structure.

Horses Lyrics
[Verse 1]
All my flannels made in Bangladesh
All my t-shirts in Vietnam
There are places that we quietly ignore
There are places that we go and bomb
You know I thought an awful lot about Jesus
Even more about Lao Tzu
They say that the way of the Tao is to do nothing
Then what the hell am I supposed to do?

[Pre-Chorus]
You know the harder you think, the deeper you sink
The tighter you grip, the further you slip

[Chorus]
So I'm singing this song about loving
All the people that you've come to hate
It's true what they say, I'm gonna diе someday
Why am I holding on to all this weight?
You know I really thought that thеre'd be power
In thinking half of y'all was just born fools
Thought I was gathering oats for my horses
I was getting by whipping my mules

When I was young, lyrics were important... dad singing standards at the piano, Skylark. Misty. Tenderly. Mom joining in. Music was something you just did, and you had to know the words.

Pop arrived when we moved to California: "93 KHJ" emanating from the little AM radio in my bedroom. Simple lyric hooks, prosody. I didn't think about it. Just listened to it all and played clarinet in the Jr. High school band.

Teen years music was all about everything but the lyrics. Structure and tone. What was cool and progressive. Clarinet was abandoned... I needed to play more than one note at a time. Hello Piano!

And then I found Steely Dan. The music was so good, and their lyrics! Renewed my interest in hearing and appreciating it all.

Joni finished the job.

I still play the piano, but love using breath controllers with my VIs.... thanks for the training, clarinet!
