I also have a Facebook account; but I joined just to be able to access a certain developer. But, no, I don't spend time there reading comments. However, I am hugely supportive of eldritch weirdness that freaks out pre-humans. That stuff rocks!

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

You're right. It is cold. It is dark and cold, which don't often go together. Maybe what I'm thinking of as sterility is better understood as coldness. Enjoy your cold, dark dreams. There may be demons down there.

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

Yes, I think that sounds right. It is analogue - and the oscillators are voltage controlled rather than digitally controlled. But the basic sound does hit me as digital adjacent, even before it goes through the digital effects. I wonder if it is the lack of chaos in the sizzle at the cutoff...

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

That's a good idea. There is something brutal about the sound, even if it it sounds rather controlled. Charlie Clouser could probably make magic with nearly anything, though!

And thanks for taking the time; it's great to get another person's perspective on this.

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

I doubt there is any problem with the quality, based on reviews this and the companies other products; though I've never tried any myself. It is analogue, but the effects - including the distortion - is digital. So that could be a significant factor. I believe that synths are usually recorded...

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

I think so, and the basic sound quality seems pretty consistent in other demos. The feeling I get seems to be stronger with sustained sounds.

Dreadbox Artemis - why does its sound scare me?

https://dreadbox-fx.com/artemis/ This hardware synth retails at around £1100 (similar in Euros and USD). It is analogue, with VCOs rather than DCOS (so voltage controlled oscillators rather than digitally controlled ones). It has some digital aspects, so it can store presets and has excellent...

Oh, goodness, I am so out of touch with social media! I recoil from it in awed horror as if it were an eldritch, alien artefact with Ligeti music swelling around us.

I have no idea if it will work; but I do know that it wouldn't work on me. But I'm old, bitter, and short of time. Maybe you'll catch some younger fish, though!

Perhaps an alluring name for a thread could help. 'The art of songwriting' could lead to some reflections that could generate interest. Or something about getting noticed: 'How to whore your product' might not be the best name, though... But maybe 'What are people listening to?' or, 'Building an...

Production Talk and Recording, Mixing, and Mastering forums seem to largely overlap each other

I suspect that the difference concerns the level of technical detail about specific processes. But, as I can't be certain, I think that means that you are right that it isn't completely clear.

Producing for mix separation and clarity

I'd like to put in a word for layering. Clarity and separation in the mix needn't apply to everything. Sometimes, you may want multiple tracks layering sounds to create a single piece of the mix. So, the individual tracks may lack clarity; but the the whole piece together can be clearly heard...

    How do you generate ideas?

I really like here what you are saying about training - formal or informal - being so important to developing these skills. There is such a thing as talent; but so much of what we think of as talent is really developed talent; which is to say, skill. Hard work can make a huge difference. In my...

    How do you generate ideas?

Apparently Brian Wilson is really good at arranging harmonies in his head. He also writes it out on music paper, so I'm sure some amount of finalising happens at that stage too.

    How do you generate ideas?

That's great. The mental looping and remembering things in from the liminal state between sleeping and waking... That is really hard for me as I tend to lose the idea; but I love it when it works. I'm really glad for you that you can get a lot out of that.

    Where is the drama zone

I don't know about others, but I would prefer that such songs not be quarantined. The discussion shouldn't evaluate the merits of the political position voiced or critiqued by the song; but only the merits of its effectiveness as a song - including whether the lyrics scan, etc. It will...
